In 1945, at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show, a ten years kid, cowboy-dressed, go up a chair to reach the microphone and sing “Old Sheep”. Few months later, as birthday gift, will receive his first guitar. The unstoppable legend of “The King” had started.
Because, despite marketing campaings and continuous radio station promises, there has been and will only be one King. During his infancy, Elvis Presley had the dream of becoming a Hollywood star or melodic singer. We were lucky, with him rock’n roll was born.
Elvis, the icon
In the United States, Elvis Presley embodies the paradigmatic image of the american dream. Out of its frontiers, he is seen as a fiery singer that primed the pump to the unstoppable fire ball that would become the actual rock. Doesn’t matter how we see him, the only undeniable is his image of cultural and social icon. A role forged as the legends are forged.
And the thing is that “The King” accomplish with a star archetype. Starting by his origins, very modest. His parents were part of what was known as “white scum”, that in those times southern social structure was only over slave’s descendants. But he never rejected about a decent and hard-working family. He was a boy with a minimal education that earned his first dollars working anywere (cinema attendant, truck driver…), discreet and mommy’s boy whose only eccentricities were the clothing and hairstyles. A perfectly ordinary guy with a divine gift: a specially powerful voice, an incomparable scenic capacity, an incredible adaptability to different genres and a unique charisma.
When Elvis massively succeeded, he didn’t let himself be seduced by the success. He settled down in Memphis, surrounded by his friends, he didn’t avoid the contact with people in the street and his generous gifts to stranger people were famous. As a fortunated artist he was, showed his wealth and privileges, but like another southener more he kept his feet on the ground, always ready to help the family, friends and strangers.
His music and specially his nature configured an image that went beyond all the barriers. Including his dead, occurred on august 16th 1977. That day “The King” definitely became a legend and an icon for all of us.
