We live in a society where the advance in technology is so common that often we aren’t conscious of its real impact. Is the case of Internet, possibly one of the most important advances in the last decades. We can appreciate the impact of an advance by the way it changes our society and is undeniable the way Internet has changed the way do things. Although in reality it’s not being so long, now we don’t remember how the world was before all of us were connected. We just remember it when we run out of MB’s in the cellphone or when we have problems with the router. And how we suffer when it happens! It’s only then when, for an instant, we are conscious about how Internet has changed so much our life.
It’s not a question about if the change has been positive or negative. All changes have good and not so good things, is inevitable. But it is true indeed that when we talk about Internet’s impact in our society, we have to recognize that has been a total revolution. What less than dedicating a day to remember it!
What’s Internet Day
Internet World’s Day is an initiative that came up by the Spanish Internet Users Association in the year 2005 that many south American countries joined. Its goal was approaching Society of Information to the citizens.
The great reception to the event in the first edition, with more than 400 events in more than 8.000 places of 31 provinces in the 17 Autonomous Communities, made that in November of the same year the 2nd Society of Information World Summit celebrated in Tunisia, to propose the United Nations General Assembly declaring May 17th like Telecommunications and Society of the Information World Day.
In their conclusions, the Society of the Information World Summit, celebrated in Tunisia stated: “It is necessary to contribute Internet’s better knowledgement to become a global ressource really accessible to the public. We make a call to United Nations General Assembly to declare May 17th International Day for Society of Information, that will be yearly celebrated and serve to better know the importance that this global resource has in the questions treated in the Summit, especially, the possibilities that can bring using ITC to the society and economy, and the different ways to fulfill digital’s breach”.
This way and officially, May 17th was declared Internet World’s Day.
What’s happening during Internet World’s Day
Everybody (particulars, administrations and enterprises) are invited to participate on Internet’s Day. There are several ways to participate and contribute. In many cities commemorative events take place, organized by companies, administrations and organizations of any kind and size.
During that day, activities related to approach Society of the Information to the non connected take place: talks, conferences, courses. But also concerts, schools make activities about the new technologies, online shops offer discounts and Internet Day awards are presented, whose objective is recognize people’s and institution’s efforts to incorporate the citizens to Society of the Information and promote accessibility to the network.
