Maybe you don’t know it, but on May 17th is celebrating Internet Day. An international initiative started in Spain. The idea appeared in 2004 from an Internet Users Association (A.U.I.) spanish acronym for “Asociacion de Usuarios de Internet” proposal. Diverse spanish organizations and entities joined the project because had a good impression about sharing a date to approach Society of Information to all citizens.
So, finally, on October 25th 2005 the first Day of Internet was celebrated with a great success of participation. In this first edition 534 events were organized along all the country and more than 200 public and private entities endorsed the Declaration of Principles to establish Society of Information.
Less than month later, in november, during Society of Information summit celebrated in Tunisia, at the request of the same A.U.I., and due to the great success of october’s celebration, it was agreed to request United Nations General Assembly to declare an Internet International Day to celebrate it around the world.
In march 2006 the U.N. decided set may 17th, day dedicated to the telecommunications, as Internet Day, adding Society of Information International Day, to promote the importance of ITC and the diverse matters related to Society of Information suggested at SIIS.
Internet Day philosophy
The philosophy that resides under Internet Day concept is well summarized with 2005 Society of Information International Summit conclusions document, in the article 121 we can read:
It is necessary to contribute Internet’s better knowledgement to become a global ressource really accessible to the public. We make a call to United Nations General Assembly to declare May 17th International Day for Society of Information, that will be yearly celebrated and serve to better know the importance that this global resource has in the questions treated in the Summit, especially, the possibilities that can bring using ITC to the society and economy, and the different ways to fulfill digital’s breach
How to participate with Internet Day
Everybody can participate with Internet day and, for that there are diverse ways to cooperate and contribute. In many cities (especially in Spain and South America) commemorative events take place to celebrate that date, organized by enterprises, administrations, public and private organizations from any kind and size. Only must follow the following conditions:
- To approach Society of Information to the non connected or disabled.
- That its main event takes place on may 17th.
- Must be announce at diadeinternet.org, Internet Day informative web site.
Also everybody as individual or colective can subscribe to the declarations that takes place and Internet Day awards are presented, whose aim is to recognise individuals and entities efforts to incorporate the citizens to Society of Information, encourage the accessibility to the net and stimulate an open involvement of people and institutions.
Internet Week
